Ok so, I think there should just be descriptions of objects and their connections. A text file typically doesn't have any connections, maybe a backwards connection to storage and file symantics. It can exist almost everywhere. A satellite has a forward connection to satellite receivers and a backwards connection to transmitters. Forwards and backwards don't have refer to movement and could be interchangeable although forward should typically refer to down-tree movement. There could be a bigger object that has satellites in it that define what's forward and backward. A C file may have a forward movement to a c compiler.

Like file associations? =%>

I want metadata interpretation at the OS level. "What's the most recent file I created using this sub-file. But even the sub-file kinda wants to go away. Its gonna get a little nicer with touch screens... (hopefully.)

I'm just not convinced that there's not better ways to display data than hierarchically. Trees are soo... individuated. You can enrich them by including metadata but ultimately what I want is cognitive clusters and fullscreen data display.

Yeah, a little. More like associations for everything.

Well, you could make editing an object who's backwards connection is sub-file and who's forward connection is created-file. Then you could go backwards and see sub-file.

Cognitive clusters? Explain.

I guess kind of similar to what y'r describing but more associative based rather than hierarchical. I usually have verb to do in mind to a noun or several. Sometime recent file lists help, but they're not the end-all be-all. Like the OS learning my user behavior, and making it simple for me. Like XP's wizards, but much less annoying. The OS learns that if the USB drive is plugged in, it should always open the shell, and never do anything else. Again something that XP does, but clunky. And free-floating arrangement of files by metadata settings of which the OS takes care. They've got CMS with "intelligent" content self-coding now.

How about training your computer -- have it try different display schemes and you can encourage it or reprimand it. I like the adobe plugins that had the more-like-this gestural analogy.
