A hit-and-run just happened outside my window. I didn't see it but I heard it. Having seen two other people get hit by cars I kinda know what they sound like. It sounded like he was hit pretty fucking hard. Debris is laying all over the place. He's laying on the ground not getting up. a number of years ago I saw this guy get hit by a car on his bicycle, he was riding a block behind me. He was thrust two-thirds across the street. It sounded like this guy was hit harder then that. The cops and a firetruck and an ambulance have arrived. People are frantically describing what happened. Fortunately for this guy there's like six witnesses. I hope they find whoever did this. Sometimes I hate cars. They have way too much power, you know. They can kill you and the people around you pretty quickly. This is part of the reason why I choose not to drive.

I'm just starting to bike and everyone keeps warning me about the dangers of getting hit by a car. I definatly know some people who have. But, I'm going to bike anyway (and I can't wait!)

That's the position I take. I enjoy biking far too much to let fear take it from me, that and I'm pretty careful.

I had eight major (as in cars hitting me, broken bones etc) bicycle accidents by the time i was 18. So i wasn't keen to get my licence either... reasoning that i would kill someone for sure through my chronic accident proneness. And you would think not wanting to drive was like some kind of crime against humanity, the way my folks went on. I hate cars too.
(now i ride a motorbike... and i haven't had an accident in 10 years of riding! Touch wood!!)

By the way, have you seen this article?

http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2008/05/08/1210131112608.html

Unfortunately, this is typical behaviour of drivers on Australian roads. If it hadn't been a pack of high profile riders it never would have made the news.

Wow, you've had so many accidents! I did drive a car a couple of times. The second time I drove through my parents garage. That kinda turned me off to the whole notion. Still, my folks bring up the fact that I don't drive now and then in a negative light. I live an a big enough city where it's totally not needed. But I don't need to justify not driving to anyone do i?

Oh geeze, no I haven't seen that article. Fucking bull-shit. What fucking idiots. That seems to be the behaviour in a lot of places.

Good job at not getting into any accidents in ten years! I hope you keep this up.
